Her book, Crying over Spilt Milk: Breast-feeding and Its Substitutes in 19th-Century French Art, deals with the depictions of breast-feeding and motherhood in France in that period. Her other studies also focus on the points of contact between visual culture and medicine and deal with the history of the family, pain, death, sleep and Christian iconography.
